A woman in the UAE was sentenced to prison and deportation for offering a bribe to an employee of the traffic department.

A woman of Arab descent who offered chocolates and 500 dirhams ($ 136) as a bribe to an employee of the traffic and licensing department of the police of the Emirate of Sharjah, UAE, was sentenced to six months in prison, a fine of 5 thousand dirhams ($ 1.36 thousand) and deportation.

A woman who failed a driving test seven times allegedly tried to bribe an official to get a driver’s license.

A spokeswoman for the service reported the incident to the police, as a bribe is contrary to work ethic.

The defendant offered money as a bribe. This is a punishable offense in accordance with Articles 237 and 238 of the Federal Criminal Code.

During the trial, the defendant said that she gave money and sweets as a gift and did not intend to bribe an employee.

The court did not accept her arguments and convicted.

Article 237 of the Federal Criminal Code states that any proposal made to a public official or public servant, even if he or she did not accept it, is punishable by imprisonment.

Article 238 emphasizes that the offender must be fined at least 1000 dirhams ($ 272) for the offense.
