Dubai police will forgive small traffic violators

Dubai police will remove fines for minor traffic violations from diligent drivers.

Dubai, UAE. Dubai police made another indulgence for diligent drivers - the agency will remove fines from them for minor traffic violations so that they can maintain the accumulated discounts on fines received until February 2019.

"We cannot let the diligent driver, who followed the rules for six months and earned a 50% discount on fines received before February of this year, wind up all the efforts due to minor violations committed in the last six months," said Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Murray, Commander-in-Chief of the Dubai Police.

He recalled that since February 6, 2019, Dubai has a new scheme for regulating fines: every 3 months, drivers who diligently observe traffic rules receive a 25% discount on fines received before the entry into force of the new rule. Thus, after 6 months the discount is 50%, after 9 - 75%, and after a year - 100%.

Previously, “clearing fines” implied that the driver should not commit any violations, but now the rules have been supplemented and allow for minor violations that will not affect the accumulation of discounts. It is not reported exactly which violations are considered minor, but the Arab press clarified that this refers to the driver’s actions that do not endanger the life and health of other people.

Since the launch of the new initiative, 457,154 drivers have received 25% discounts, and the total number of traffic violations amounted to 1,260,046. Over the same period, the number of road deaths fell to 20 from 29 over the same period last year. The number of accidents from February to August decreased to 43,947 from 48,247.
