Dubai ruler establishes its own Peace Prize

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and ruler of Dubai, issued Decree No. 19 of 2011 on the creation of the Peace Prize - the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum World Peace Award.

The decree of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum declared the establishment of a new Peace Prize and the appointment of a special Council of Trustees who will choose who to award this prize to. In accordance with the decree, Dr. Hamad Al Sheikh Ahmed Al Shaibani was appointed Chairman of the Council of Trustees, Sultan bin Butti bin Mejren, Vice-Chairman, Muhammad Saeed Al Merri, Dr. Omar Muhammad Al Khatib, Dr. Safe Matar Al Jaberi, Muhammad Suheil Al Muheiri, Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Shamsuddin Muhiddin, Abdul Samad Muhiddin, Ahmed Abdul Hamid, Abdul Salam Baar Ambel and Mohsin bin Ahmed. The decision on the appointment of the Council for a three-year term can be updated and comes into force from the moment the decree is issued and its full text is published in the official press.

One of the most important tasks of the Peace Prize, stipulated in Article No. 4 of the decree, is to encourage organizations for their outstanding contribution to strengthening world peace, promoting civilized interaction of nations, maintaining universal peace and harmony, supporting dialogue between different religions and demonstrating the true image Islam as a religion of forgiveness, generosity and peace.

Article No. 2 of the decree states that the Peace Prize has the status of a legal entity, has financial and administrative independence, and is fully capable of fulfilling its duties and achieving its goals and objectives.

The Board of Trustees is authorized to make preparations for the organization of the Dubai Global Peace Conference, including the timing of its holding, approval of nominations for awards, the creation of specialized committees and working groups. The Council will also elect the Secretary General of the Peace Prize, who will have the power to propose an annual action plan that is consistent with the goals of the Prize. The fiscal year of the Peace Prize will begin on January 1 and end on December 31 of each year.
