Emirate doctors urge residents to monitor sodium levels in drinking water

Emirate doctors urge residents to independently monitor the sodium content in drinking water.

Dubai, UAE. Emirate doctors urge residents to independently control the sodium content in drinking water, since exceeding its concentration can cause serious health problems. As Dr. Ashish Batia of NMC Royal Hospital in Abu Dhabi noted, sodium levels of no more than 10 mg per liter are safe.

He noted that an excess of sodium in the blood causes confusion, irritability, fatigue, leads to depression, swelling, muscle cramps and cramps, an increase in general anxiety and physical weakness.

Excessive sodium intake leads to narrowing of blood vessels, therefore, the risk of developing hypertension, stroke and heart failure increases, and during pregnancy can harm the fetus. They note that the daily norm is the consumption of mineral water with a low level of sodium for an adult from one to one and a half liters per day. Thus, the amount of sodium consumed should not exceed 35 mg per day, including as part of food and drinks.

It should be noted that the Office for Standardization and Metrology of the UAE in the near future should test all types of drinking water sold in the country. Thus, water in which the sodium content exceeds 16 mg per liter will not be allowed on store shelves. Doctors also clarify that the level of sodium in tap water is exceeded, so it must be boiled before use.
